FINDING A NEW KIND OF PARADISE.

From black sand beaches and staggering waterfalls in the south to snow-capped mountains and arctic temperatures in the north. Teamrider Youri Zoon and photographer Orestis Zoempos travelled to the tip of the Arctic circle and discovered the magic sceneries and remote waters of Iceland. Stay tuned and follow him on his roadtrip during this month!

DAY 1 – LET THE JOURNEY BEGIN

DAY 1 – LET THE JOURNEY BEGIN

‘’The journey starts in Reykjavik. From here, we will explore Iceland’s remote waters and untapped kitesurfing spots. Iceland’s Ring Road, an 828 miles long national road, will lead our campervan through its’ incredible landscapes, and most importantly, it will bring us to Iceland’s finest kitesurfing spots.

Since Iceland’s weather conditions change by the minute, and the wind forecast wasn’t showing anything at that moment, we decided not to look at it anymore and just go with the flow. Let the journey begin!’’

DAY 2 – CHASING WATERFALLS

‘’The first 2h drive from Reykjavik was nice, but not wow. Until we stopped over at the first waterfall, and yes that was WOW! We visited the Skogafoss fall, a massive waterfall with a drop of 62 metres. It was busy, but we managed to take some sick shots. Definitely worth the trip!’’

DAY 3 – BLACK SAND BEACHES IN THE SOUTH

‘’The black volcanic sands, misty cliffs and huge waves crashing on the shore characterize one of Iceland’s most beautiful beaches: Reynisfjara. For us, it felt like we found the perfect location to shoot the new Youri Pro.

After an early rise, we went out for some shootings, until the very moment we got send off, since somebody owned the beach and the rock. That left us hanging with the question: how the hell can you own a rock? Haha ☺

Anyway, we already shot the content we needed, so we stepped back in the pre-heated camper van. It was time to hit the road again, as we were 283 kilometres away from our first kite session. Let’s go to Höfn!’’

DAY 4 – FIRST SESSIONS AND TESTING OUT THE NEW GEAR

‘’After spending the first days shooting and visiting Iceland’s southern highlights, it was finally time to kite! Just before we arrived in Höfn, we saw the wind picking up and everybody got a little bit more excited. Were we finally  able to ride? On our right hand side, we saw this awesome lake with an amazing backdrop. Unfortunately the wind was offshore, coming over the glacier, so riding in the sea wasn’t really an option. But this lake on the other hand looked absolutely magical! We found a way to get there and parked the van right at the lake.

The gusty 15 – 20 knots coming over the glacier didn’t offer the best conditions and damn it was freezing! But hey, I scored my first Icelandic session and it felt good to be on the water again!’’

DAY 5 – IT’S GETTING COLDER

‘’’We moved further up north, weaving in and out fjords all day, pumping up the jams, while enjoying the incredible Icelandic views. Along the way, we had some freezing kite sessions (again), but the incredible mountain views in the back definitely made up for it! 577 kilometres down, 936 to go!’’

DAY 6 – FINDING SNOW UP NORTH

‘’We’ve made our way to Seydisfjordur, a small town in the Eastfjords, made up of multicoloured houses, surrounded by snowy mountains and stunning waterfalls. The 100 km drive from Djúpivogur took us 2.5 hours, since the maximum speed on Iceland’s Ring Road is 90 km/h, but it definitely provided us with the most beautiful sceneries!’’

DAY 7COLD WATER SESSIONS

’After 6 days of driving, we arrived in the town Blondúos! We checked out the map and found some lagoons and lakes right on the beach after Blonduós. It looked perfectly for some action, the wind was cranking, everything seemed easy, but it was a mission to get close to the water! After driving around for an hour, we finally found access to the beach and end up riding close to the seaside. I went out for a session, it wasn’t crazy, but more of a nice cruise with a solid 25 knots (and yes, again freezing my ass off).

Afterwards, it turned out to be my last session, not a bad one if you’re surrounded by rocky mountain peaks and black sand beaches. What a great trip it’s been!’’

Location: Blonduós and Snæfellsnesvegur

DAY 8 – BACK IN REYKJAVIK

‘’And we’re back in Reykjavik! We definitely didn’t get the most epic conditions we’ve hoped for, but Iceland has surprised me in every way. We shot some amazing content and we’re more than stoked about the outcome.

This trip was the first of many, since I decided to stop competing and focus more on creating content and project like these. Stay tuned, thanks for following and join me during this new chapter…’’
